Endoscopic Breast Surgery
The a minimally invasive option.
Breast surgery is usually performed using traditional incisions near the site of the tumour. Such methods though may leave a scar in a visible place although your surgeon will be mindful of this and try to place incisions in relatively obscured places such as around the areola or under the breast.
However endoscopic techniques have certain advantages over these traditional methods. Endoscopic breast surgery involves a smaller incision being made in either the armpit, or under the breast, with tiny surgical instruments then passed through this incision using an endoscope to access the actual surgical site.
The Endoscope
The endoscope is a long narrow tube that is inserted into the incision and manoeuvred into position in the breast itself. Your surgeon will use a tiny camera on the end of the endoscope to allow visual access to the surgical site in order to manipulate the surgical instruments remotely. This type of surgery offers you the opportunity for a very small incision site, with little visible scarring, and precise work which does little damage to nearby tissue.
Less Invasive
As this type of surgery is considered less invasive it may allow you to have a speedier recovery over traditional methods of breast reconstruction. You are advised to ensure that your surgeon has experience with endoscopic surgery and to consult the before and after pictures available in order to understand what can be achieved.
